Everyone knows that healthy food and exercise are important components to an overall healthy lifestyle. But there are other important factors to also consider. Sometimes we get so caught up in our exercise programs and healthy diets that we forget about the other things we could be doing to create a healthier and happier life.

While food is important to our bodies, water is even more critical. Most people simply do not drink enough water each day to support proper body function. Without enough water, our bodies are not able to properly perform vital functions, such as removing waste. A cup of coffee in the morning, a soda for lunch, and a glass of wine with dinner simply will not get the job done. It is necessary to drink water throughout the day. Opinions vary on the amount, but a good recommendation is eight glasses of water each day.

Sleep is something else that we regularly deprive our body of. It is vitally important to one’s overall health to get enough sleep. When we skimp on sleep, our bodies are not able to properly rest and regenerate. Additionally, lack of sleep can be mentally taxing, and can cause stress, premature aging, and overeating. Going to bed a few hours early each night can make a big difference in one’s good health. Even if you have a hectic schedule, find time to get enough sleep.

Stress is also a big problem for many people today. Hectic work schedules, family responsibilities, and too many things that need to be done can cause frazzled nerves and almost unbearable stress. Everyone has times when things get particularly hectic, but constant stress can be detrimental to one’s health and mental well-being. Finding ways to ease up on one’s schedule can help, but if that is not possible, then look for other ways to relax. Meditation is a great way to quiet the mind and reduce the negative effects of stress. Even if you only have a few minutes each day, meditation or breathing exercises can help. Many people also find that a walk can be a great way to burn off stress and calories at the same time.

Negativity is another silent problem that may be causing problems in your life. Just as is the case with stress, constant exposure to negativity can be detrimental to one’s health. While it is impossible to avoid all negativity, it is important to reduce it whenever possible. Learning to recognize the negatives in your life is the first step. Perhaps you are involved with negative people who are constantly complaining or criticizing you. Or, maybe you are your own worst enemy when it comes to negative thoughts. Either way, working to reduce negativity is a great way to improve your health, and feel happier and healthier.
